Raw Material Handling
Raw Material Handling & Storage SMP, a fast growing security fencing manufacturer and home of Vista-Mesh security fencing needed a new warehouse to receive and manage all the raw materials they use in their manufacturing process. https://paragonsteel.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/SMP_Paragon.mov The Specs SMP is set to expand with an additional 864m² of covered material handling and storage space. This new structure, measuring 18m x 48m, will provide easy access for large steel deliveries, with sufficient entrances and considerable roof height. To improve operations, an overhead crane will be installed, allowing for the movement of multiple lengthy steel IPE beams, tubes, and wire rolls, which are presently managed with forklifts. Through our unique partnership with leading overhead crane and material handling suppliers we are able to advise and offer the most affordable fit for purpose solution to material handling in any building be it green field or existing. Overhead cranes greatly boost efficiency when handling heavy steel materials, improving production flow, safety and enabling the client tooptimize the use of storage space, while minimizing stock damage. This enables the business to manage incoming stock more effectively, ultimately leading to enhanced productivity and a reduction in unnecessary expenses caused by inadequate stock visibility. Internal Addition
The Chocolate box A national retailer commissioned Paragon Steel Structures to fabricate the internal structure for a large cold storage facility within their existing warehouse in KZN. The “Chocolate Box”, will be a huge cold room in the DC where the chocolate stock will be kept. This was a challenging project. We were working within an existing fully operational structure with racking and shelving as well as fire prevention pipelines already in place. We also had to ensure the existing girders were not compromised during the installation of this new element. The Process We began by marking out grid lines from the existing column faces to establish our new steel grid lines. Once squared and with all bay centres verified, we drilled 22mm anchor holes into the existing concrete floor. After clearing out the concrete dust, we applied Hilti HY200 glue, a highly trusted and valued product in construction which is often, as in this case, specified by the engineers. We marked a level line on each existing column using a Dumpy level. Datum levels were measured to locate the first hole, as specified in the drawings. Holes were drilled into the columns with a Magbase and a M18 core cutter. When the steel arrived, it was offloaded in a temporary laydown area before being carefully brought inside using a 25-ton crane that had to navigate the tight entrance of the existing structure. The columns, which were around 20 meters long, were spliced together using splicing plates. Each column was assembled in three sections with splicing plates to hold them together. On the ground, we joined the pipe braces and vertical bracing, lifting them as a single unit. Once the columns were installed and bolted securely, we moved on to fitting the beams. The beam installation proved challenging due to the minimal clearance for the 25-ton cranes. However, with careful manoeuvring, we managed to place the beams and then fitted more pipe braces. Despite the challenges, our team once again proved they were up to the task and delivered the expected results to our client. Steel Structure Signage Gantries
How Its Made N3 Signage Gantries Specialist plate work fabrication involves creating complex and custom metal structures, components, and assemblies from flat metal plates. This process is used in various industries, including construction, shipbuilding, aerospace, and, in this case for road signage gantries over the N3. The Process Before anything else, detailed designs and engineering plans are created, using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and TEKLA software, to ensure precise specifications and dimensions. Once the structural engineer is happy with and signs off the design, an appropriate type of metal is selected based on the required properties, such as strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion. Next the project moves to the CNC department and Advanced cutting techniques like CNC laser cutting, plasma cutting are used to cut the metal plates into the desired shapes and sizes. Once all the pieces of the puzzle have been cut to size the plates are formed into specific shapes using methods such as bending, rolling, and pressing. This can involve both manual and automated processes. These formed sections must then be welded together. Our fabrication team uses MIG, and arc welding to join the metal pieces together. Precision and expertise are crucial to ensure strong and reliable joints. Next the various holes for anchoring the structure are drilled using our CNC beam drilling line which ensures absolute precision and accuracy of all fastener points. To enhance the durability and appearance of the finished product, the surface is manually cleaned and then painted. Rigorous quality control measures, including inspections and testing, are conducted to ensure the fabricated components meet the required standards and specifications. The individual fabricated parts are transported to site where they are assembled into the final structure and then lifted by a large crane. Specialist plate work fabrication requires skilled technicians, advanced equipment, and a thorough understanding of materials and processes to produce high-quality, custom metal components and structures. A new steel structure bridge in Nambiti
Nambiti Bridge Paragon steel structures rigged and installed a new steel structure bridge within the Nambiti Private Game reserve. The new bridge replaced the original that was washed away in the devastating April floods. The bridge is a three-piece structure, with each 12m section weighing in at just over 8 tons. Because of the size, two of the sections were assembled together on site. The double section created a 24m, 16.7-ton section on one side of the river bank. And the other single section was moved to the other side of the river. https://paragonsteel.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Nambiti_SML.mov The single-section steel structure was hoisted and bolted in place first and held firmly secure by the smaller 100t crane. Then the heavy double section was lifted using a 150t crane from Schoeman Crane Hire and slowly maneuvered across the river, docking into position with the awaiting single section on the other side. The challenge with this steel structure installation was the distance the crane needed to stretch away from its centre of gravity carrying nearly 17 tons. This meant the calculations had to be perfect. Luckily the modern equipment used by Schoeman Crane Hire was able to calculate all this and stipulate the counterweights needed on the rear of the crane to balance the load. With a lot of rigging costs involved and numerous teams doing their part, it was crucial that every detail was calculated, that everything went according to plan and that the installation was successful in one single attempt. Delaying the process in any way would incur major extra rigging expenses. So the project involved absolute precision engineering and fabrication to ensure all the angles lined up when the three sections were in their final positions. Ultimately this could not have been done without the accuracy of the design engineers at Vigar And Associates.
